Halloween 🎃 or All Saints? What do we celebrate and why

Oct. 15, 2021

The night of October 31 and November 1 are the days when the Halloween and All Saints parties take place. In our culture, the traditional celebration is that of All Saints, a day of worship where we honor and commemorate the memory of our deceased, making visits to the cemetery, placing flowers, etc. But at the same time, Halloween night has become more and more pervasive in our society.

Halloween 🎃 or All Saints? What do we celebrate and why

Both celebrations have death as a connection point, although with two very different ways of commemorating it: one more serious and with spiritual awareness and another more festive and focused on terror . To carry out our energy work it is important to know both festivities, therefore, today we will explain their origin and how, from Las Velas de Mariano , we recommend taking advantage of it at an energy level.

Halloween night

In its origin, this festival comes from the Celtic culture , where at the end of October it celebrated the end of summer and good harvests. It was said that at this time a link was opened between the world of the dead and that of the living . That night, both good and evil spirits could appear. To drive away the latter, the Celts made all kinds of offerings during this night.

Later, this festival spread throughout North America due to immigration in the 19th century. Starting in the 70s, due to the horror movies and Halloween parades in the United States, this party evolved into a night of decorating the houses, horror costumes and the typical "trick or treat" , where children Dressed up, they go from house to house and the neighbors give them candy or trinkets.

All Saints Day

In Christian culture , the dead are commemorated on November 1. It was Pope Gregory IV who extended this celebration, which consists of visiting the deceased in cemeteries to show that we still remember them. It is customary to leave the tombstones ready and to place beautiful bouquets of flowers as gifts.

In Mexico and South America, the Day of the Dead is celebrated on November 1, where popular belief says that deceased relatives visit the world of the living for one day . For this reason altars with his photos, candles, food, flowers and a long etcetera are placed to honor his memory. For them, this day is considered more of a celebration and not a lament.

At Las Velas de Mariano , we commemorate All Saints' Day as a moment of reflection and remembrance towards our loved ones. On this date, we recommend doing simple energy works with white candles to give light, accompany and remember our deceased. We can also use other candles such as the Guardian Angel , to send protection on their way.
