Palo Santo, known as "holy wood," has been used for centuries for its incredible energetic and spiritual properties. This aromatic and powerful natural resource not only cleanses and purifies spaces but also elevates personal well-being by connecting us with inner peace. In this article, you will discover the secrets and benefits of Palo Santo, and how you can incorporate it into your daily routine to balance the energy of your home and life.
Palo Santo is an aromatic tree that grows on the coasts of Ecuador and Peru. Traditionally, shamans used it to perform purifying rituals, as they firmly believed in the magical properties of this wood. Healers also held healing sessions with Palo Santo due to its therapeutic power.
When we lightly burn its wood, its smoke releases a very pleasant aroma that promotes calm and stimulates positive vibrations. That is why it is considered the perfect tool for performing energy cleansings both at home and on individuals.
Its aroma helps relax stressful situations, providing the environment with a new state of peace and harmony. Besides its magical use in many cultures, Palo Santo is used in New Age practices such as yoga, Reiki, and aromatherapy, as its scent helps deepen meditation and concentration.
We recommend burning Palo Santo with charcoal, taking shavings from the wood and letting them burn in a burner. Another option is to light the wood itself with a match or lighter. Once it starts to burn, we state our intention regarding the cleansing we wish to perform. After about 30 seconds of burning, we gently blow to make it start producing smoke. Remember to blow periodically to keep the smoke coming.
We should direct the smoke to the corners and spaces where we believe negative energies or bad influences might accumulate more easily. You can also pass the smoke around your family members or roommates, performing a physical and spiritual cleansing, thereby creating an energetic shield of protection. It is advisable to start the cleansing from the furthest point from the door and move toward the outermost point.
There are no specific dates or times to perform this cleansing; we should rely on our perception. Nevertheless, there are moments when it is especially advisable to do so: during moves, inaugurations, when new tenants arrive, after a large meeting… Even problems themselves can become trapped in the environment.
We can purify the energy of stones during their first use or when we feel their energy is heavy. To do this, we will light the Palo Santo in the same way as in the cleansing ritual, holding the Palo Santo in one hand and the mineral in the other, and we will envelop the stone in smoke to purify its energy. You can do this with one or several crystals at a time.
