Everything you didn't know about Summer Solstice and San Juan 🔥

June 16, 2023

The summer solstice is a date charged with energy, since from ancient Celtic culture this day was used to perform different ceremonies and rituals to take advantage of its powerful vibrations, but we wonder: What did the Celts do? What meaning did it have for them? And if it is related to the festivity we celebrate today?

Everything you didn't know about Summer Solstice and San Juan 🔥

Celtic culture on the solstice 🌞

For the Celts, the summer solstice was a date of great importance, since it is the longest day of the year and, therefore, there would be more hours of sunshine, a factor that benefited them because their crops could grow faster and stronger. For them it was a promise of a good harvest, since the sun reached its maximum splendor and manifested itself in fullness. In addition, they believed that it was a moment in which they could renew energy and protect themselves where the Earth and the cosmos had a great connection 🌿 Such was their belief that they celebrated different festivities such as Litha or the King of the Oak.

During Litha they honored the sun through rituals prepared by the druids and made bonfires to purify and protect people and crops. All this made for a strong bond between humans and their gods, since it was a moment of union between the spiritual world and the earthly.

The other figure was the King Oak, they took a man at random and dressed him with oak branches to honor that festivity and thus to be able to honor nature, which was very important to them. Another of the traditions they had was, on the magical night of San Juan, collecting plants such as St. John's wort, Verbena or Manzanilla 🌾 since they believed that their properties were enhanced by picking them up on that special night.

Relationship with our culture

In our culture we tend to light bonfires during the night of San Juan, which is closely linked to the summer solstice, since we continue to have the influence of the planets  ✨ Some even dare to jump over it, it's a way to purify themselves and make the fire take away what we don't want. In addition, we launch fireworks artificial 🎇 to light up the sky, it is often said that it serves to bring light to what is to come in the future. We also take advantage of these dates to light rituals or make requests and thus benefit from the energy of this day. Many people take ritual baths to cleanse and heal themselves thanks to the water and the properties it adopts on this magical night 🔮

In other cultures it is common to a burning of dolls, different rag dolls or figures are created to represent the evil spirits and thus be able to purify and get rid of the negative when they are burned in the bonfires 🔥

All this shows that this important day for the Celts has become a tradition that has been adapted to different cultures, making each year for the Summer Solstice and San Juan we do different acts or rituals to perform energy cleansing, attract luck and get rid of the bad.

Take advantage of the alignment planetary to make any kind of request.
